The Giver - Writing Assignment

You will be completing a RAFT assignment by pretending you are Jonas in The Giver. You will have to think like Jonas based on what you’ve read. Write an argument to persuade your audience about your topic. Your argument should include a thesis, at least three reasons, a counter argument and rebuttal, and concrete details from the novel. Remember to write in the first person (I, me, my).

Role (pretend you are): Jonas

Audience (write to): Father

Format: letter

Task: Convince your father that you had no choice but to take Gabriel and escape to Elsewhere. Include three examples to support your response. Think about what Father’s counter argument might be and include your response to it (a rebuttal).

Complete your prewriting today using the graphic organizer. Tomorrow, you will begin typing your letter in a Google Doc. Be sure to use specific examples to support your argument. Think about the format of a friendly letter.
